Launches National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism

The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs to commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and to explore the themes of Bulgarian modernism. The inaugural event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” was held in his hometown of Tryavna at the Slaveykov House Museum. The December issue of LIK magazine will document the campaign, featuring reports from the discussions alongside a special section containing 160 contributions of 160 words each, mirroring a prior tribute to Aleko Konstantinov.

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Pencho Slaveykov represents a model for the modern individual: one who remains open to new ideas. Valchev noted that being modern, according to Slaveykov, involves embracing new concepts while pursuing spiritual growth and universal values, without abandoning national identity or tradition. He added that Slaveykov’s work was shaped by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, recalling that Pencho Slaveykov was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1912.

Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov stated that a goal of the initiative is to create a national self-portrait through new interpretations of familiar works, aiding Bulgarians in self-understanding. He emphasized BTA’s role in providing accurate information amid misinformation. Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev described Slaveykov as a keen observer of national character and a bold critic striving for higher artistic standards.

The initiative, according to Minev, preserves Bulgaria’s cultural memory and continues the poet’s legacy. Vijay Joshi of the Press Trust of India suggested that India could draw inspiration from how the BTA partners with local communities to promote and preserve Bulgarian culture. Pencho Slaveykov, who faced physical impairments early in life, developed a worldview influenced by figures like Henrik Ibsen and Friedrich Nietzsche, resulting in both lyrical and socio-critical works, cementing his role in Bulgarian literary history.
