LIK Issue Dedicated to 150 Years Since April Uprising Launches in Koprivshtitsa

The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. This thematic publication from the Bulgarian News Agency explores the uprising through its archives, incorporating information on historical commemorations documented in BTA’s news service and bulletins. The issue also features commentary from educators, public figures, and local community representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the event.

The magazine is scheduled for launch at the St. Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa on Monday, April 20, marked as the Day of the First Shot. The event will begin at 2:00 pm and will be broadcast via video link with BTA’s national press clubs both in Bulgaria and internationally.

Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are partners in the presentation; the Academy is also releasing its own publication, “150 Years Since the April Uprising.”

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the issue compiles key discussions held at national press clubs and in the four revolutionary districts: Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte. He emphasized that the discussions highlighted lessons from the uprising relevant today, concluding that its ultimate outcome was Bulgaria’s freedom. Journalist Boyko Vassilev stated that discussing the April Uprising is fundamentally a conversation about contemporary Bulgaria.

In another piece, Prof. Georgi Valchev discussed the youth of the leaders, noting their commitment to freedom over material gain. Prof.

Atanas Semov argues that the uprising represents the greatest collective endeavor of the Bulgarian people. The LIK chronology compiles historical news reports from BTA’s archives, tracing coverage from the 20th century to the present day.
