LIK Issue Dedicated to 150 Years Since April Uprising Launches in Koprivshtitsa

The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine focuses on the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. The Bulgarian News Agency’s thematic publication explores the uprising through its archives, featuring historical records and details of commemorations held over the years within BTA’s news service and bulletins. The issue also incorporates perspectives from educators, public figures, and local community representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the event.

The launch of the magazine is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at the St St Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, marked as the Day of the First Gunshot. This event will commence at 2:00 pm and will be broadcast jointly with BTA’s national press clubs in Bulgaria and abroad. Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are partners in the presentation; the Academy is also releasing its own publication, “150 Years Since the April Uprising.”

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the LIK issue compiles key discussions held at the national press clubs and in the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte.

He emphasized that the discussions highlighted lessons from the uprising relevant today, concluding that the effort ultimately led to Bulgaria’s freedom. Journalist Boyko Vassilev stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising remain relevant to understanding contemporary Bulgaria. Prof.

Georgi Valchev highlighted the youth of the uprising’s leaders, noting their choice to prioritize “being”—political freedom—over accumulating wealth. Corresponding Member Prof. Atanas Semov affirmed that the April Uprising remains “the greatest collective endeavor of the Bulgarian people.” The magazine includes a thematic timeline drawing from BTA’s archives, detailing coverage from the 20th century, including accounts from veterans and international writers.
