LIK Issue Dedicated to 150 Years Since April Uprising Launches in Koprivshtitsa

The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine focuses on the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. The Bulgarian News Agency’s thematic publication explores the uprising through its archives, incorporating records of commemorations held over the years within BTA’s news service and bulletins. The issue also features commentary from educators, public figures, and local representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the event.

The magazine launches on Monday, April 20, at the St. Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, marking the Day of the First Shot. This event will be jointly broadcast via video link with BTA’s national press clubs in Bulgaria and internationally.

Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are partners, with the Academy also publishing its own related material. BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the publication summarizes discussions held at the national press clubs and in the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte. He stated that the discussions highlighted key lessons from the uprising relevant today, emphasizing that despite perceived setbacks, the movement ultimately led to Bulgaria’s freedom.

Journalist Boyko Vassilev suggested that the discourse surrounding the April Uprising remains pertinent to contemporary Bulgaria. Prof. Georgi Valchev discussed the youth of the leaders, arguing that their choice to pursue political freedom superseded the conventional advice to maintain family wealth.

Prof. Atanas Semov asserted that the April Uprising remains the greatest collective endeavor of the Bulgarian people. The LIK magazine includes a thematic timeline compiling news reports from BTA’s archives, spanning from its founding in 1898 to the present.

The issue also references past commemorations, such as those marking the 69th anniversary in 1945, and details future plans for the 150th anniversary, including events scheduled for 2026.
