The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine focuses on the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. The Bulgarian News Agency’s thematic publication compiles information regarding the uprising through its archives, including records of commemorations held over the years. The issue also incorporates commentary from educators, public figures, and local representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the uprising’s history.
The launch event for the magazine is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at the St. Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, recognized as the Day of the First Shot. This event will commence at 2:00 p.m.
and will be broadcast via video link to BTA’s national press clubs both in Bulgaria and internationally. Partners in the presentation include Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which is also releasing its own publication on the 150th anniversary. BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the issue reflects key discussions held at the national press clubs and in the centers of the four revolutionary districts: Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte.
He emphasized that while the discussions highlighted lessons from the uprising, the consensus reached was the necessity of focusing on overarching goals to achieve national freedom. Journalist Boyko Vassilev remarked that discussions about the April Uprising remain relevant to contemporary Bulgaria. In another contribution, Prof.
Georgi Valchev discussed the youth of the uprising’s leaders, noting their decision to prioritize freedom over material security. Prof. Atanas Semov asserts that the April Uprising stands as the greatest collective endeavor of the Bulgarian people.
The LIK magazine features a thematic timeline drawing from BTA’s archives, chronicling coverage of the uprising from the mid-20th century onward.
