Market Discrimination Most Common in Hiring and Pay

A survey conducted by the Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) in November–December 2024 surveyed 592 respondents, finding that 53.7% reported experiencing some form of discrimination. The study analyzed manifestations of economic discrimination across various sectors. In the labor market, discrimination was reported concerning hiring practices by 47.8% of respondents, followed by issues related to pay (33.1%).

Other reported areas of concern included receiving additional benefits (32.6%), working conditions (26.1%), and career development (31.2%). The CPD noted that older workers (53.8%), ethnic minorities (50.4%), and individuals with disabilities (36.1%) were among the groups most affected by discrimination. Beyond employment, discrimination was also reported when accessing services, with 36.5% citing issues in healthcare, education, and social care.

Further manifestations included discrimination in determining goods and services prices (27.2%), public procurement (27.9%), and financial institutions (25.4%). The CPD highlighted that the most common cause of economic discrimination, according to 51.4% of respondents, is the imposition of negative perceptions toward certain groups. The CPD recommended strengthening anti-discrimination regulations and implementing public awareness campaigns.

CPD Chair Elka Bozhova stated that the primary area for protection is the right to work on various grounds. The CPD stressed that its proceedings to address discrimination are free of charge.
