The development of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of the most substantial infrastructure investments planned for Bulgaria in the coming years. The proposed facility is designed to significantly expand the airport’s capacity, with plans for a new terminal covering approximately 65,000 square meters. This new structure is intended to connect with the existing Terminal 2 and accommodate up to 20 million passengers annually.
Beyond the physical expansion, the project scope includes developing a modern transport hub and enhancing connectivity links between the airport and the city of Sofia. Construction is anticipated to commence in the coming years, with an expected completion date around 2030–2031. Stakeholders have emphasized that the project’s significance extends beyond passenger throughput.
The new terminal is positioned to function as a catalyst for economic growth, aiming to enhance the attractiveness of the region for future investment and residency within Bulgaria. In terms of execution, SOF Connect announced the start of the pre-qualification stage for the tender process in November 2025. This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, a comprehensive transport center, and the modernization of the current Terminal 2 facilities.
This major infrastructure upgrade is set to redefine the role of the airport within the capital, solidifying its status as a key gateway for Sofia.
