The planned construction of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of Bulgaria’s major upcoming infrastructure investments. According to statements made regarding the project, the proposed new terminal is designed to cover approximately 65,000 square meters. This facility is slated to connect with the existing Terminal 2 and possess the capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers annually.
The development plans extend beyond the airport structure itself, incorporating the creation of a new transport hub and enhancing connectivity links with the city of Sofia. Construction is anticipated to commence in the coming years, with an expected completion timeline around 2030–2031. The significance of the Terminal 3 project is viewed as multifaceted.
Beyond its operational scale, proponents suggest it aims to enhance Sofia’s profile, symbolizing both a welcoming gateway for visitors returning to Bulgaria and a center for future economic development. The formal tendering process for the project began in November 2025. SOF Connect announced the start of the pre-qualification stage for the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, as well as for the forecourt area, a comprehensive transport center, and the modernization of the existing Terminal 2 at the Sofia airport.
This ambitious infrastructure upgrade is positioned to significantly bolster the capacity and connectivity of the capital region.
