The proposed construction of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of the largest planned infrastructure investments for Bulgaria in the coming years. The ambitious project is designed to significantly expand the airport’s capacity and connectivity within the capital, Sofia. According to project outlines, the new terminal is slated to cover an area of approximately 65,000 square meters.
It will integrate with the existing Terminal 2 and possess the capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. Beyond the main structure, the development plans include establishing a new transport hub and enhancing connectivity links between the airport and the broader city of Sofia. Construction is anticipated to commence in the near future, with a projected completion date around 2030–2031.
The significance of the facility extends beyond its physical scale, aiming to bolster the economic profile of the region and present development opportunities within Bulgaria. In a procedural update, SOF Connect announced the commencement of the pre-qualification stage for the tender process in November 2025. This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, a comprehensive transport center, and the modernization of the current Terminal 2 facilities.
The development of this major terminal is positioned to reinforce Sofia’s role as a key gateway for international travel and commerce into Bulgaria.
