Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At a national conference held at the Panagyurishte History Museum, Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. Gagov emphasized that the commemoration should serve as a reminder of the ordinary citizens who became national heroes. He stated that the anniversary provides an opportunity for Bulgarians to reflect on national unity and pride.

Gagov noted that the timing of the commemorations, coinciding with an election campaign, prompted him to draw a contrast between contemporary political leadership and that of the past, suggesting the comparison was unfavorable. He argued that the observance of the april uprising must achieve two goals: establishing a truly national commemoration, mirroring the spirit of the original revolt, and allowing the public to reconnect with history as a source of national pride. According to the mayor, Bulgarians currently suffer from a “deficit of pride,” and this anniversary offers a chance to recall the achievements of their ancestors, stressing the shared roots between past and present generations.

He contrasted the revolutionary fervor of the youth in 1876, who prepared for sacrifice, with the current generation, which he observed engaging with social media. Gagov stressed that the heroes of the uprising were not mythological figures but real individuals. He urged Bulgarians to understand their legacy on a human level, asserting that the sacrifices made by those “ordinary people whom history made great” are relevant to the present.

The conference is part of a broader series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) under the initiative “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe.”
