Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At the national conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees, urging Bulgarians to embody the spirit of the ordinary people who became historical figures. The event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) at the Panagyurishte History Museum, focused on prompting reflection on national unity and pride through the memory of the April Uprising. Gagov noted that the commemorations coincided with an election cycle, drawing a contrast between contemporary political figures and the revolutionaries of the past, a comparison he stated was unfavorable to the present political climate.

He argued that the anniversary should serve two primary functions: establishing a genuinely national commemoration, mirroring the aspirations of the original uprising, and enabling the public to understand history as a source of national pride. According to the mayor, Bulgarians currently suffer from a “deficit of pride,” making the anniversary an opportunity to recall the achievements of their ancestors, emphasizing that current generations share the same national roots. He contrasted the revolutionary youth of 1876 with today’s youth, noting the difference between preparing for sacrifice versus engaging with modern social media.

Gagov stressed that the heroes of the April Uprising were not mythological figures but real individuals. He called for their legacy to be understood on a human level, asserting that the people of today are inheritors of that spirit. He concluded by urging Bulgarians to live up to the example set by those “ordinary people whom history made great.” The conference is part of a broader BTA initiative marking the 150th anniversary, titled “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe.”
