Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has acquired new, high-specification apparatus, substantially increasing its capacity for air medical evacuation of critically ill and injured patients. The institution confirmed the purchase of five complete sets of vital medical equipment. This inventory includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, alongside supplementary gear such as defibrillators and suction pumps.

These advanced systems ensure that intensive care and resuscitation readiness can be maintained throughout long-distance air transport. With this new capability, the MMA can manage the simultaneous air evacuation of up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and specialized treatment during flight. The acquired equipment is certified for onboard aircraft use and is ready for immediate deployment in emergency scenarios.

The MMA remains the only hospital in Bulgaria combining specialized medical equipment with trained personnel for air medical evacuation services. Operating in close coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, the academy’s teams are prepared to respond to large-scale incidents, accidents, and military conflicts requiring the rapid evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. According to Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, the new technology improves the ability to deliver care under challenging conditions.

He emphasized that successful air medical evacuation relies equally on advanced technology and highly trained teams capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk environments. The MMA maintains operational readiness through regular training flights that improve coordination between its medical and aviation structures.
