The caretaker Minister of Innovation and Growth, Irena Mladenova, stated that effectively combating disinformation necessitates coordinated efforts among the technology sector, the scientific community, and governmental bodies. Speaking at the concluding event of DisInfoHack 2026 at the GATE Institute at Sofia University, Mladenova emphasized that these stakeholders must work together to ensure society can make informed decisions and remain resilient against external influences with unclear objectives. Mladenova highlighted that initiatives like DisInfoHack are valuable not only for their immediate outcomes but also for the long-term foundational work they support in countering disinformation.
She noted that the structured format of the event, which involves mentorship and prolonged idea development, helps build sustainable skills among participants. The primary goal, she explained, is to foster the ability to accurately discern reliable information within the current information flow. A key objective of the initiative, according to the Minister, is the creation of a robust network and the expansion of shared knowledge.
She urged participants to disseminate what they have learned to their peers and colleagues to amplify the project’s impact. DisInfoHack is part of a larger three-year endeavor called Countering Disinformation Environment (Ecosystem) in Bulgaria (CoDE). This project employs a scientific approach to enhance information resilience by analyzing the Bulgarian information environment.
The overall effort aims to identify and summarize best practices and tools necessary for an effective fight against disinformation.
