Caretaker Minister Emil Dechev stated that the ministry has significantly curtailed vote buying during an interview with Nova TV on Sunday. Dechev indicated that the combined efforts of the ministry and the caretaker government have bolstered public confidence in the electoral process, stating that efforts have successfully encouraged participation in voting. Addressing recent threats against acting Interior ministry Secretary General Georgi Kandev, Dechev suggested that the threats reflect Kandev’s diligence in his role.
Earlier in the week, Kandev reported receiving calls from unknown numbers alleging that individuals were providing false testimony at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, an effort allegedly coordinated by a former Interior ministry official. Dechev suggested the threats originate from individuals who, in his view, have long believed they control the country. He elaborated on a perceived gap between publicly elected officials and unelected individuals who allegedly hold true power.
Dechev confirmed the threats against Kandev were linked to Svetlozar Lazarov, a former Secretary General of the Interior ministry (2013–2015). The ministry official also mentioned that one person allegedly involved in providing false testimony was the owner of a roadside assistance company receiving state funds despite prior convictions. Regarding Borislav Sarafov’s resignation as acting Prosecutor General, Dechev characterized it as a “very delayed action and an overdue enforcement of the law.” Concerning reports of Constitutional Court judge Desislava Atanasova and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski traveling together by private plane, Dechev stated that the ministry has no information to support this.
While confirming Peevski’s use of private jets, Dechev noted the ministry has no details regarding aircraft ownership, suggesting the jets might belong to another individual. He advised that the Bulgarian National Audit Office should assess the proper declaration of assets by relevant public officials.
