The acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, stated on Friday that he faced pressure following communications received on Thursday. In a Facebook video, Kandev recounted receiving several calls, including one from an unknown number via a mobile application. He was informed that an individual known as “Kartofa” and his associates were presenting false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO).
Kandev alleged that these actions were orchestrated by a former Ministry official named “Svetlyo.”
Kandev questioned the SCPO regarding the credibility of testimony from “convicted and criminally charged individuals” and sought to identify the sources behind the alleged scenario. Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly supported Kandev, describing the pressure as a “vendetta” occurring at the SCPO under prosecutor Emilia Rusinova. Gurov characterized Rusinova and former magistrate Petyo “The Euro” Petrov, who is accused of influencing the judiciary, as being connected.
Interior Minister Emil Dechev also voiced support for Kandev, alleging that “old cops” were employing tactics to undermine the Secretary General. Dechev asserted the Ministry’s commitment to curbing electoral crimes. Assen Vassilev, leader of the Continue the Change party, called the threats against Kandev “scandalous” and advocated for judicial reform.
Furthermore, the Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors of being manipulated to target officials involved in institutional reform, referencing a perceived pattern of influence involving Boyko Borissov and Delyan Peevski.
