Ministry Secretary General “Under Pressure”, Politicians See Revenge for Crackdown on Electoral Crime

The acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, stated on Friday that he had been subjected to pressure. In a Facebook video, Kandev recounted receiving multiple calls on Thursday, including messages urging him to “go home.” He claimed that during one such communication, he was informed that an individual nicknamed “Kartofa” and his associates were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO). Kandev alleged that this scenario was orchestrated by a former official from the Ministry of Interior named “Svetlyo.” He questioned the legitimacy of the testimony and the timing of the actions.

Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly stated that the entire caretaker government supported Kandev. Gurov characterized the alleged pressure against the acting Secretary General as a “vendetta” occurring at the SCPO under prosecutor Emilia Rusinova. He linked Rusinova to Petyo “The Euro” Petrov, a former investigating magistrate
