Six new instances of measles have been reported in Bulgaria, escalating the cumulative total to 165 cases as of April 23, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent cluster of measles cases was distributed across several regions: two were identified in Vratsa, two in Lovech, and one each in Pleven and Sofia. In response to the outbreak, public health officials initiated immediate measures.
Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, reported that since early March, 20,000 children have received vaccinations protecting against measles, mumps, and rubella. The initial wave of concern began on March 19, when the Ministry of Health confirmed the first eight measles cases, which were located in the Vratsa region. Following these early confirmations, health authorities promptly issued directives mandating emergency immunization for all children identified as unvaccinated.
These ongoing efforts underscore the Ministry’s commitment to controlling the spread of measles and safeguarding public health. The continuous monitoring of these cases and the implementation of vaccination campaigns remain central to the national health strategy. The sustained vigilance aims to curb further transmission and protect the general population from preventable diseases.
