Slaveykov Calls for Living Approach to Literary Tradition, Says Poet Yordan Eftimov

Poet, literary scholar, and critic Yordan Eftimov advocated for a dynamic approach to literary tradition during an event in Tryavna on Monday. He addressed the launch of a nationwide series of discussions commemorating the 160th birth anniversary of the notable Bulgarian poet, Pencho Slaveykov, and the broader theme of Bulgarian modernism, organized by BTA. Eftimov characterized Slaveykov not only as a major author but also as a significant public figure whose legacy warrants careful study.

He stated that such commemorative initiatives are crucial for reviving the authentic memory of great cultural figures, arguing that modern educational practices sometimes risk reducing these figures to mere stereotypes. Furthermore, he cautioned against the tendency to treat writers as “lifeless idols,” referencing Slaveykov’s own concept of “petrification.”

A key objective of the discussions, Eftimov noted, is to facilitate a national self-portrait through fresh interpretations of familiar literary works, thereby aiding the Bulgarian populace in achieving a deeper understanding of their own culture. He emphasized BTA’s role in disseminating accurate information and expert analysis in an era marked by widespread misinformation.

The agency’s expanding network, he added, will provide a comprehensive view of how the poet Slaveykov is remembered across Bulgaria and how his ideas continue to influence discourse. Eftimov concluded by highlighting Slaveykov’s dual capacity as both a modernizer and an Europeanizer, suggesting that contemporary attitudes toward him reflect the ongoing development trajectory of Bulgaria itself.
