Poet, literary scholar, and critic Yordan Eftimov advocated for a dynamic and living approach to literary tradition during an event in Tryavna on Monday. The discussion, organized by BTA, marked the launch of a nationwide series commemorating the 160th birth anniversary of Pencho Slaveykov and focusing on Bulgarian modernism. Eftimov characterized Slaveykov not only as a significant author but also as a prominent public figure.
He stated that such commemorative initiatives are vital for reviving the authentic memory of major cultural figures, arguing that modern educational methods sometimes risk reducing these individuals to mere stereotypes. Furthermore, he cautioned against treating writers as “lifeless idols,” referencing Slaveykov’s concept of “petrification.”
A secondary objective, Eftimov noted, is using new interpretations of familiar works to construct a national self-portrait, thereby aiding Bulgarians in a deeper understanding of their own identity. He emphasized BTA’s crucial role in disseminating accurate information and expert perspectives in the current climate of misinformation.
The agency’s expanding network, he added, will provide a comprehensive view of how the legacy of the poet Slaveykov is remembered across Bulgaria and how his ideas continue to influence contemporary thought. Eftimov concluded by highlighting Slaveykov’s dual role as both a modernizer and a Europeanizer, suggesting that the prevailing attitudes toward his work offer insight into Bulgaria’s own developmental trajectory within the literary landscape.
