Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a no-confidence motion pass against his administration, the primary course of action for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain within the government, but explicitly outside a coalition involving the Social Democratic Party (PSD). Nevertheless, Bolojan indicated that the party could also transition into the opposition, aiming to establish a “pole of modernization” alongside other political forces. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister stressed that the continuation of reforms is mandatory regardless of who ultimately assumes power.
He highlighted the current fiscal improvements, noting that public budget revenues have increased by 12% and expenditures have decreased by 3% over the last ten months since strict austerity measures were implemented. Bolojan criticized previous fiscal management, stating that the state budget had historically functioned as an undeserved repository for inefficient administrations and incomplete projects. He asserted that he had been compelled to implement strict controls, much like a family managing finances during significant payments, by focusing resources on areas experiencing substantial losses.
He claimed that he became a political target precisely because he refused to act as a compliant prime minister and actively blocked the misuse of public funds. When questioned about running for the presidency, Bolojan remained non-committal, stating only that he remains an active individual prepared to advocate for Romania’s best interests. The no-confidence vote against his government is scheduled for May 5th, having been tabled by the PSD, AUR, and MIR.
This motion followed the PSD’s withdrawal of support from the PNL, which leads the current coalition.
