Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a no-confidence motion against his administration pass, his National Liberal Party (PNL) would prefer to remain within the government structure, though not in a coalition involving the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the PNL retains the option to move into opposition, seeking to form a broader “pole of modernization” with other political entities. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that continuous reforms are necessary regardless of the political composition of the government.
He pointed to economic indicators, noting that public budget revenues have increased by 12% and expenditures have decreased by 3% since the introduction of strict austerity measures ten months ago. Bolojan criticized past fiscal practices, asserting that the state budget was historically misused by inefficient administrations. He stated that he initiated necessary controls, comparing the process to a family managing finances during significant payments.
He added that he became a public target specifically because he resisted the misuse of public funds. When questioned about running for President, Bolojan maintained that he remains an active figure committed to Romania’s interests, suggesting that he could have sought the office when opportunities presented themselves. The context for these remarks is the no-confidence vote scheduled for May 5th, which has been tabled by the PSD, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and MIR – Romania First.
This action followed the withdrawal of support by the PSD, the largest party in the ruling four-party coalition, from the Prime Minister, who leads his party. The current coalition government, comprising the PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR, assumed office last June.
