PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a motion of no confidence against his government pass, the primary course of action for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain in the administration, though not within a coalition involving the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the PNL could consider moving into opposition to establish a “pole of modernization” alongside other political forces. Speaking in an interview with TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that institutional reforms must continue regardless of the political composition of the governing body.

He highlighted the economic performance, noting that public budget revenues had increased by 12% and expenditures had decreased by 3% following the implementation of strict austerity measures ten months prior. Bolojan defended his fiscal policies, explaining that the state budget had historically been used inefficiently. He asserted that his actions were necessary to establish financial discipline, preventing the misuse of public funds.

Regarding future political ambitions, when questioned about running for President, Bolojan responded that he remains an active figure committed to serving Romania’s best interests, suggesting that his candidacy would have been viable at other times. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5th and was tabled by the PSD, the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR – Romania First group. This move followed the PSD’s withdrawal of support from the Prime Minister, who leads the PNL.
