Municipal Council to Request Taking Over Management of Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis from Culture Ministry

The Plovdiv Municipal Council voted on Thursday to formally request assuming the management of the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis from the Culture Ministry. The basilica operates under a co-ownership regime, with the Plovdiv Municipality holding a 55.8% stake and the State owning the remaining 44.2%. According to the Municipal Council, taking over management is intended to strengthen the protection, maintenance, and preservation activities related to this significant immovable cultural asset.

The council stated that direct municipal oversight will facilitate the execution of scientific, cultural, educational, and tourist initiatives focused on the site. The decision underscored the municipality’s commitment to the protection, preservation, exhibition, and promotion of the area’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis is recognized for its high historical, artistic, and scientific value.

Its importance is further highlighted by its inclusion in the UNESCO Tentative List for Cultural and Natural Heritage, specifically as part of the serial property known as “Bishop’s Basilica and Late-Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace.”

This move reflects the local government’s desire to streamline stewardship of the monument. The Municipal Council believes that assuming direct control will ensure the most effective and focused approach to managing the site’s ongoing conservation needs and maximizing its cultural impact for future generations.
