Museum Director: April Uprising Shows Bulgarians Succeed When They Act Independently

During a conference hosted by BTA commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, addressed the significance of Bulgarian history.

Shopov posited that Bulgarian achievements, citing examples like the April Uprising and the subsequent Unification, demonstrate success derived from independent action and strategic surprise. He stated that history serves not only as a record of the past but also as a guide for the future, emphasizing the necessity of collective progress and avoiding past errors. Recalling the events of April 30, 1876, he described the local community of Panagyurishte as having risked everything for future freedom, despite anticipating defeat.

He noted that by the mid-19th century, the town possessed a robust civic structure, with numerous guild associations and businesses mobilized for the common cause. According to the Museum director, while the insurgents understood they could not overcome the Ottoman Empire militarily, their actions successfully awakened a deep sense of national strength. Shopov highlighted the April Uprising as a source of significant patriotic examples that require ongoing interpretation.

Furthermore, he pointed to the assembly in Oborishte as evidence of early statehood and tolerance—values he believes are vital for the modern European context. The forum, supported by the Panagyurishte Municipality, underscores the town’s pivotal role in shaping Bulgarian state traditions. This commemoration is part of a larger initiative by BTA to mark significant anniversaries in Bulgarian history leading up to 2032.
