On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the historical event. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) Director General Milen Mitev, and several academics and local officials.

During his address, BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions on the April Uprising serve to recall the sacrifices made for Bulgaria’s freedom. He noted that the talks spanned the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev highlighted that a key takeaway was the need to establish overarching goals before addressing the necessary steps.

BNR Director General Mitev emphasized the media’s role in connecting with the public, arguing that understanding the spirit of the April Uprising, particularly the willingness to make sacrifices, is vital. He cautioned that national pride must be responsibly cultivated, as history and pride can be manipulated. Prof.

Georgi Valchev advised viewing history as a living subject, moving beyond mere slogans. He stressed that the 1876 uprising demonstrated the desire of Bulgarians to control their own destiny, emphasizing the crucial lessons of collective belief and the responsibility of the youth. Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov urged Bulgarians to honor the legacy of the ordinary people who became heroes.

He stated the anniversary should promote national unity and help people understand history as a source of contemporary pride. The discussions underscored that the April Uprising remains a relevant touchstone for modern Bulgarian public life.
