On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the significant anniversary. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.

Georgi Valchev, Rector of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Panagyurishte History Museum.

BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising revive the memory of those who sacrificed for Bulgarian freedom. He noted that the conferences were held in the press clubs of the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized that the key takeaway was the consensus on prioritizing broad goals over immediate, difficult steps.

He also announced that the 2026 BTA Media Meeting would focus on “Media and Leaders.”

BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s vital role in connecting with the public during the anniversary. He argued that learning from the April Uprising involves recognizing the foundational importance of hope and sacrifice. Mitev cautioned that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, as history can be manipulated.

Prof. Valchev urged viewing history as an active process, moving beyond mere slogans. He highlighted that the 1876 uprising demonstrated a desire for self-determination, with the youth taking on significant responsibility.

Panagyurishte Mayor Gagov suggested the anniversary should prompt reflection on unity, urging Bulgarians to honor the legacy of the common people who became heroes during the uprising.
