On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) across several revolutionary districts, aimed at fostering dialogue regarding the historical period. Speakers at the event included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.

Georgi Valchev, and local officials. BTA Director General Valchev stated that the discussions emphasize learning from the past, noting that the most critical consensus reached was the necessity of establishing overarching goals before addressing complex steps. BNR Director General Mitev stressed the vital role of media in shaping public opinion, asserting that media outlets must actively engage their audiences.

He advised that national pride must be nurtured responsibly, preventing the manipulation of history. Prof. Valchev argued that history should be treated as a living narrative rather than a source of mere slogans.

He identified three major lessons from the 1876 events: the desire for self-determination, the belief in the nation’s future, and the crucial role of the younger generation.
