On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

During a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising, Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that the commemorations serve to honor the martyrs who fought for Bulgarian freedom. The conference was the final event in a series of discussions organized by BTA across several revolutionary districts, including Panagyurishte, Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, Ruse, and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized that the discussions highlighted several crucial lessons from the April Uprising applicable today.

A central theme was the understanding that the uprising’s perceived failure ultimately resulted in Bulgaria’s national freedom. He further stressed the significant influence of media, noting its capacity to shape public opinion and aid national endeavors, drawing parallels to the historical context of the uprising. The commemoration encompassed a broad scope, recalling early activities such as discussions in Ruseto regarding the 1875 decisions and paying respects at memorial sites in Giurgiu and Ruse.

Valchev also referenced historical texts, particularly Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, to derive guidance for leadership. According to him, effective leaders must remain active, avoid personal gain, and shield their followers from despair.
