Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Kiril Valchev, stated that the recent discussions commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising have revived the memory of the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. Speaking at the opening of a conference in Panagyurishte, Valchev noted that these talks were the culmination of a series of events held across several revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Giurgiu. During the conferences, participants discussed significant lessons drawn from the April Uprising.
Valchev emphasized that the primary consensus reached was the necessity of defining overarching goals before undertaking difficult steps to achieve them. He highlighted that historical setbacks, such as those during the uprising, ultimately contributed to Bulgaria’s eventual freedom. Furthermore, he drew a parallel between this historical concept and spiritual salvation, noting the profound impact media can have on public opinion and national movements.
Drawing from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, Valchev advised that effective leadership requires continuous activity, dedication to the common good over personal gain, and the ability to guide followers away from despair. The commemoration efforts have been extensive, involving tributes at key historical sites and the presentation of specialized publications by BTA. Valchev announced that these discussions underscore BTA’s commitment to the topic, leading to plans for a 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media, which will focus on the intersection of “Media and Leaders.” These efforts continue to keep the memory of the April Uprising central to contemporary Bulgarian discourse.
