Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising serve to honor the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. Speaking at the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising in Panagyurishte, Valchev noted that this event was the culmination of a series of discussions held across the four revolutionary districts and other key locations. Valchev emphasized that the talks highlighted crucial lessons from the uprising applicable today, stressing the necessity of defining major objectives before undertaking challenging steps.
He pointed out that the historical narrative often portrays the uprising’s conclusion as a failure, yet the discussions concluded that this very perceived failure ultimately secured Bulgaria’s freedom. He drew a parallel between this historical lesson and the concept of salvation, noting that media coverage can powerfully shape public opinion and aid national preservation, as seen after the April Uprising across Europe. The discussions also covered leadership principles, drawing from excerpts of Zahari Stoyanov’s writings.
Valchev cited recommendations for leaders to remain active, avoid personal gain, and shield their followers from despair. He further noted that effective leadership requires diverse knowledge and that leaders must remain accountable to the populace. The BTA has organized these commemorations across various sites, paying respects at memorial plaques and honoring figures like Hristo Botev.
Looking ahead, Valchev announced that the BTA’s 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media will be dedicated to “Media and Leaders,” continuing the focus initiated by these anniversary discussions.
