Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Kiril Valchev, stated that recent discussions concerning the 1876 April Uprising serve to honor the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. These remarks were made during the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concludes a series of discussions organized by BTA across several revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, Panagyurishte, Ruse, and Giurgiu.
Throughout the talks, participants discussed key lessons derived from the uprising, emphasizing the necessity of establishing overarching objectives before undertaking difficult preparatory steps. Valchev noted that the discussions concluded that the uprising’s perceived setbacks ultimately contributed to Bulgaria’s ultimate success: achieving freedom. He highlighted the role of media in shaping public opinion, suggesting it can significantly impact national outcomes, drawing parallels to the historical context of the April Uprising.
Valchev also presented insights drawn from excerpts of Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, advising that effective leadership requires activity, selfless dedication, and the ability to guide followers away from despair. The commemoration process has been extensive, including memorial tributes in Giurgiu and Ruse, and honoring figures like Hristo Botev and Vasil Levski. Looking ahead, Valchev announced that these commemorative discussions will continue in BTA’s press clubs in Bucharest, Belgrade, and Odesa.
