Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a motion of no confidence pass against his administration, the primary option for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain in the current government, provided it does not involve the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the PNL could also move into opposition to form an alternative “pole of modernization” with other political forces. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that reforms must continue regardless of who ultimately assumes power.
He highlighted the fiscal improvements achieved over the past ten months since austerity measures were implemented, noting a 12% increase in public budget revenues alongside a 3% decrease in expenditure. Bolojan criticized past practices, stating that the state budget was frequently misused by inefficient administrations and for delayed projects. He explained that implementing strict controls was necessary, much like a family managing significant finances.
Bolojan added that he had become a focal point because he refused to serve as a compliant prime minister and actively blocked the misuse of public funds. When questioned about running for President in the next elections, he responded that he remains an active individual committed to doing what is best for Romania. The context for these remarks is the no-confidence vote scheduled for May 5th.
The motion was filed by the PSD, the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR parliamentary group. This action followed the withdrawal of support by the PSD, which was the largest party in the ruling four-party coalition that formed the current government led by the PNL.
