PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should the no-confidence motion against his administration pass, the primary course of action for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain within the government, provided it is not in a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the party is prepared for alternative scenarios, including moving into opposition to establish a “pole of modernization” alongside other political groups. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that institutional reforms must proceed regardless of the composition of the ruling government.

He highlighted economic improvements, noting that public budget revenues rose by 12% and expenditures decreased by 3% in the 10 months since austerity measures were implemented. Bolojan defended his stricter fiscal policies, stating that the state budget had historically been misused by inefficient administrations. He asserted that his actions stemmed from a refusal to be a compliant leader and his efforts to prevent the misuse of public funds.

When questioned about a potential bid for the presidency, Bolojan stated that he remains an active figure committed to advocating for Romania’s best interests, suggesting that an opportunity to run would have presented itself at another time. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5 and was initiated by the PSD, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR – Romania First group. The motion followed the PSD’s withdrawal of support from the PNL-led coalition government, which had taken office last year.
