Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic commented on the recent announcement by University of Belgrade Rector, Prof. Vladan Dokic, regarding his willingness to run for president. Speaking in Paracin on Wednesday, Vucic asserted that the European Union supports Dokic, suggesting that those desiring a less independent or more dependent Serbia will support him or another candidate over him.
He stated, “I am too stubborn, too Serbian, and love Serbia too much to be liked by the powerful.”
Regarding a meeting between Dokic and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, Vucic noted that Dokic has held numerous high-level meetings, though these have not been made public. He questioned the necessity of such meetings, asking, “because why would anyone meet with a university rector?”
Vucic also criticized critics, specifically mentioning Italian MEP Sandro Gozi. He stated that Serbia cannot accept support from those advocating for an independent Kosovo or those who accuse Serbia of genocide, calling Gozi a “thief.” Vucic alleged that for individuals like Gozi, the primary concern is acquiring funds and money, accusing them of being paid lobbyists for Kosovo’s independence, a status Serbia has not recognized for 18 years.
The Serbian President emphasized that while he acknowledges support for Prof. Dokic within the EU, his focus remains on the support of the Serbian people, not external backing. Dokic’s decision to potentially run for president followed a protest in Belgrade in late March concerning academic freedom, organized after police searched the University of Belgrade.
