Rector Prof. Valchev: It Is Time to Look at History as Living Page

During a conference held in Panagyurishte regarding the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev urged attendees to view history not as a static event, but as a continuous, living narrative. The prof suggested that Bulgaria is currently navigating a complex period comparable to the circumstances faced by Bulgarians in 1876, advocating for a move beyond mere commemorative slogans.

Valchev noted that the 19th century was characterized by numerous attempts to achieve political liberation, including efforts to leverage international conflicts. However, these repeated failures taught Bulgarians the necessity of self-reliance to maintain dignity. The events of 1876, according to the rector, demonstrated a collective will to take control of their own destiny—a crucial lesson for the present time.

He outlined several key takeaways from the past. First, the need for self-determination remains paramount. Second, the commemorations must serve as a commitment to preserving memory, requiring the active sharing of historical narratives and family histories.

Third, Valchev emphasized placing trust in the younger generation, who were pivotal in that era. Concluding his remarks, Prof. Valchev stated that while self-sacrifice is one concept, taking responsibility for the state’s direction is another.

He asserted that it is the duty of the current generation to organize the state by safeguarding the memory and continuing the national narrative.

  1. This perspective on history as an ongoing dialogue, rather than just a sequence of past events, is very thought-provoking.
