Rector Prof. Valchev: It Is Time to Look at History as Living Page

During a conference held in Panagyurishte commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev addressed the necessity of viewing history as a dynamic process rather than merely observing traditional commemorations. He stated that Bulgaria is currently navigating a complex period, drawing parallels to the circumstances faced by Bulgarians in 1876.

Prof. Valchev noted that the 19th century was marked by numerous efforts toward political liberation, including attempts to leverage international conflicts. He observed that after repeated unsuccessful endeavors, the Bulgarian people concluded that achieving dignity required taking personal responsibility.

The 1876 uprising, therefore, represented a determined effort to seize their own destiny. He stressed that understanding this history is crucial today, especially as global conflicts rage and the younger generation needs to recognize that heroism is attainable. The Rector outlined three key lessons from the 1876 events.

First, the realization of self-reliance was paramount. Second, the uprising was fueled by belief in the nation’s future, suggesting that commemorations must initiate a continuous commitment to preserving memory through the telling of historical and family narratives. Finally, he emphasized the importance of faith in the youth, noting that the younger generation bore the heavy responsibility of organizing the state.

Prof. Valchev concluded that it remains the duty of the present generation to organize the nation’s future.

  1. It is important to view history as an ongoing, living process rather than just a series of annual commemorations.

  2. What specific methods does Prof. Valchev suggest for treating history as a dynamic, “living page”?
