Regulator Head: Only Strong, Independent Journalism Can Hold Power Accountable

Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), stated that only strong and independent journalism possesses the capacity to hold governing bodies accountable for their decisions. Speaking at the opening of the regulator’s first meeting of her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to uphold high professional ethical standards and zealously protect the dignity of their profession. She acknowledged the trust placed in the CEM members, emphasizing that the diverse experience of the council is a valuable contribution to its work.

Looking ahead, Naplatanova stated that the CEM intends to remain accessible to the broader community, including academic institutions, the media industry, and journalistic organizations, while promoting initiatives that enhance the quality of media content. However, Naplatanova clarified that the regulator’s function is primarily supportive. She asserted that the ultimate responsibility for the health of the media environment lies with journalists and creative professionals.

She cautioned that mere declarations are insufficient to guarantee freedom of speech or journalistic autonomy. According to the Chair, only strong, independent media can facilitate critical thinking within society, enabling citizens to make informed decisions about their future. While the role of the CEM members is temporary, the effort to safeguard the media landscape must be continuous.

Naplatanova began her current term on April 28, 2024, following her election on April 23.
