Sofia Leader Slams Mladost Property Deal as Corrupt

Boris Bonev, Chair of Spasi Sofia, stated to journalists ahead of a Sofia Municipal Council session that a report regarding properties in the Mladost district raises significant concerns. The proposal involves constructing a 22-story building with an estimated 60,000 square meters of gross floor area. Bonev characterized the matter as a potentially corrupt deal, suggesting it advances against the public interest.

He expressed alarm that the plan would allow such a large structure at a busy intersection within the Mladost neighborhood. Bonev asserted that the development represented a significant overdevelopment that residents would strongly oppose. He noted that local voters have historically supported politicians advocating for curbing excessive building projects.

Municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova reinforced this view, pointing out that the Sofia Municipality owns 92% of the property, while the private owner holds only 8%. She argued that this ownership ratio logically mandates that the municipality must dictate the terms and conditions for any future development. Bonev also criticized the lack of public statements from Mayor Vassil Terziev and other political figures supporting the proposal.

He further noted that the submitted report closely mirrors a proposal from a previous term, one that was withdrawn following public outcry despite the ruling party holding a majority. Bonev concluded by criticizing the current governance environment, suggesting it permits actions that appear improper.
