Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event took place in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The activity unfolded along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where teams of students engaged in a historical scavenger hunt.

Participants navigated the area, locating monuments dedicated to national heroes and answering questions pertaining to Bulgarian history. According to Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, the initiative aims to mark the 150-year anniversary of a significant act of courage, thereby motivating students to connect with history outside traditional classroom settings. The programmed routes guided the students through locations associated with revolutionary figures, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.

By correctly answering questions, the teams collected segments of a symbolic map representing the uprising. Upon completing the walk, each group composed a short message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by their learning experience. The concept for the game was developed by history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.

The event successfully blended education with commemoration, allowing the students to trace the footsteps of the nation’s founders while honoring their legacy.
