To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Sofia Municipality organized the historical educational game, “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” within the city’s Boris Garden Park. The initiative engaged local students in a structured journey along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, designed to connect academic learning with tangible historical sites. The activity saw teams of students participating in a scavenger hunt format, where they navigated routes linking to monuments dedicated to national heroes, including revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.
Participants deepened their understanding of Bulgarian history by answering questions pertaining to the period and collecting pieces of a symbolic map detailing the uprising’s events. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, noted that the event serves to motivate students by allowing them to experience history outside the traditional classroom setting. The concept was developed by history teacher Emil Jassim and is executed as part of Sofia Municipality’s broader cultural program, in collaboration with the Sofia Regional Education Directorate.
Upon completing their circuit, each team concluded the experience by composing a short message to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on the knowledge gained. The event successfully utilized the physical setting to immerse students in the legacy of the heroes, transforming the historical path into an engaging educational experience following the footsteps of Bulgaria’s past.
