Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Sofia Municipality organized a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The event took place in Boris Garden Park, specifically along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, engaging students from local schools in an immersive learning experience. The activity involved teams of students navigating the park to locate and study monuments dedicated to national heroes.

Participants were tasked with answering questions related to Bulgarian history while following structured routes that connected key revolutionary figures, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. To deepen their understanding, the teams collected segments forming a symbolic map detailing aspects of the uprising. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the initiative serves to mark 150 years of significant national courage, providing students with an opportunity to experience history outside the traditional classroom setting.

The concept for the game was developed with the assistance of history teacher Emil Jassim and falls under the cultural programming of the Sofia Municipality, executed in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. Upon completing their historical journey, each team concluded the walk by composing a message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the knowledge gained from the journey through the footsteps of past heroes. This educational endeavor aims to connect younger generations directly with the historical narratives of Bulgaria.
