To Host Academic Session for 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A series of academic events is scheduled to take place in Sofia to mark the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University stated that the April Uprising was a pivotal, entirely Bulgarian endeavor whose outcome significantly consolidated the Bulgarian nation’s struggle for freedom. To commemorate this major historical milestone, a coalition of institutions is organizing the academic session.

Participants include Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S. Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The commemorative activities are structured across the day.

The proceedings will commence at 11 am with a ceremony held at the National Defence College. This will be followed by the official opening of the academic session at 1 pm in the Rectorate of Sofia University, where historians are set to engage in discussions across two dedicated panels. Additionally, a poster exhibition focusing on the April Uprising will open at 1:45 pm in the second-floor foyer of the Sofia University Rectorate, curated by Asst.

Prof. Vladimir Terziev. The day’s scholarly engagement continues into the late afternoon with the unveiling of the exhibition, “For the Freedom of a Nation,” at the National Library, which is jointly presented by the National Library and the State Archives Agency, starting at 5 pm.

These combined academic and cultural events underscore the enduring historical significance of the April Uprising in the modern history of Sofia.
