A ceremonial academic session is scheduled to take place in Sofia to mark the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University noted that the April Uprising was a purely Bulgarian initiative whose outcome was pivotal in the nation’s struggle for freedom. To commemorate this significant historical event, several institutions are collaborating on the academic session.
Organizers include Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S. Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The commemorative events are scheduled throughout the day.
The proceedings will commence at 11:00 am with a ceremony at the National Defence College, followed by the official opening of the academic session at 1:00 pm in the Rectorate of Sofia University. During the session, historians are slated to participate in two specialized panels of discussion. Further scholarly activities include a poster exhibition dedicated to the April Uprising, which will open at 1:45 pm in the foyer of the Sofia University Rectorate and is authored by Asst.
Prof. Vladimir Terziev. The day’s events conclude with the opening of the exhibition, “For the Freedom of a Nation,” at the National Library at 5:00 pm.
This joint effort aims to academically review the profound impact of the 1876 uprising on Bulgarian national identity and history in Sofia.
