To Host Academic Session for 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A ceremonial academic session commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876 is scheduled to take place in Sofia on Monday. St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University stated that the April Uprising was a purely Bulgarian endeavor whose outcome was crucial in solidifying the Bulgarian nation’s struggle for independence. To mark this significant moment in Bulgarian history, several institutions are jointly organizing the academic session.

Participants include Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S. Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The commemorative events will begin at 11:00 AM with a ceremony at the National Defence College, followed by the formal opening of the academic session at 1:00 PM in the Rectorate of Sofia University.

Historians are set to lead discussions across two dedicated panels concerning the anniversary. Additionally, a poster exhibition focusing on the April Uprising will open at 1:45 PM in the Rectorate’s foyer, curated by Asst. Prof.

Vladimir Terziev. The day’s activities will conclude at 5:00 PM with the unveiling of the exhibition titled “For the Freedom of a Nation” at the National Library, a joint effort by the National Library and the State Archives Agency.
