To Host Academic Session for 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A ceremonial academic session marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876 is scheduled to take place in Sofia. According to St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University, the April Uprising represented a wholly Bulgarian effort whose outcome was crucial in consolidating the Bulgarian nation during its pursuit of freedom. To commemorate this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history, a collaboration of institutions is organizing the academic event.

Organizers include Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S. Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The day’s proceedings begin at 11:00 am with a ceremony held at the National Defence College.

This will be followed by the formal opening of the academic session at 1:00 pm in the Rectorate of Sofia University, where historians will lead discussions across two dedicated panels. Additionally, a poster exhibition focused on the April Uprising will open at 1:45 pm in the Rectorate foyer, authored by Asst. Prof.

Vladimir Terziev. The commemoration continues throughout the afternoon. At 5:00 pm, the National Library and the State Archives Agency will launch the exhibition titled “For the Freedom of a Nation” at the National Library.

The joint academic session in Sofia is designed to provide comprehensive scholarly reflection on the historical significance of the 1876 Uprising.
