To Start Cabinet Formation Consultations with Parliamentary Groups on May 5

President Iliana Iotova announced on Friday that she will commence cabinet-forming consultations with the various parliamentary groups starting on May 5. According to the President, these discussions will occur separately with each group to allow for comprehensive feedback on several critical governmental matters. During the consultations, Iotova stated that the groups will have the opportunity to articulate their views regarding their operational plans within the National Assembly.

Key discussion points include the proposed approach to the 2026 state budget bill, the likelihood of establishing a new budget, and the overall legislative agenda and priorities of each faction. Furthermore, the groups will address specific projects detailed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Iotova expressed a desire for the differing viewpoints to converge on common ground, noting that time is limited for the formation process.

These consultations are a required step in the constitutional process for forming a regular government. Under established procedure, the Head of State must consult with the parliamentary groups before issuing a mandate to the prime minister-designate from the largest parliamentary bloc. Currently, the 52nd National Assembly is represented by Progressive Bulgaria, led by former president Rumen Radev.

The announcement was made while Iotova was in Panagyurishte to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The process aims to establish the necessary groundwork for the formation of the next government cabinet.
