-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group issued a declaration supporting a representative from Progressive Bulgaria for the position of Chair. MP Toma Bikov stated that this support was based on Progressive Bulgaria’s victory in the recent elections and was intended to elevate the political standards within the parliament. Bikov clarified that this endorsement should not be viewed as a negotiation tactic but rather as an effort to restore established parliamentary traditions.

He emphasized that maintaining a high political standard does not negate political disagreement; rather, it mandates the opposition’s role in representing citizens with differing viewpoints and ensuring their rights to open expression. On a broader note, the GERB-UDF group criticized the recent political climate in Bulgaria. They pointed to a pattern of coalition governments over the past twelve years, noting that the last five years were marked by a chronic political crisis and an inability among parliamentary forces to establish a stable administration.

Bikov added that this instability occurred despite the necessity for crucial reforms across various public systems and amid concerns over fiscal policies treating budget deficits as routine. The group reiterated its long-standing call for elevating the level of political debate. They cautioned that reliance on personal attacks and political scandals actively undermines public trust in the entire political system and its institutions.
