University Rector Urges Today’s Bulgarians to Have Faith as Did April Uprising Participants 150 Years Ago

During a national gathering at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, speakers reflected on the historical significance and ongoing responsibilities of the nation. Sofia University Rector Georgi Valchev addressed attendees, noting that the initial efforts of the Bulgarians who planned the 1876 April Uprising were rooted in profound national belief. Valchev stated that the modern equivalent of this dedication lies in the public’s collective actions and behavior, suggesting that restoring this faith in Bulgaria’s future is the primary civic duty.

The ceremony, held under the auspices of Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova, saw Valchev express gratitude to local governmental bodies, the educational system, and educators for their involvement in the anniversary commemorations. He also acknowledged the role of the media, particularly public service broadcasters, including the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), for co-organizing related conferences across the four former district capitals of the April Uprising. Adding an academic dimension to the commemoration, Academician Ivan Ilchev presented a report titled “The Uprising that Put Bulgaria Back on the Map of Europe.” Ilchev’s historical analysis focused on the self-sufficiency of the revolt, emphasizing that the insurrection was executed without external military assistance.

The event served as a platform to connect the foundational spirit of the 1876 uprising with contemporary efforts to maintain national cohesion and belief in Bulgaria’s trajectory.
