2, 1974: Fashion Show in Ruse Presents 300 New Models

On May 2, 1974, a significant fashion show took place in Ruse, situated on the Danube River. The event showcased 300 new models presented by several prominent Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises. Participating fashion houses included Boriana from Cherven Bryag, Arda from Ruse, Sanya from Pleven, Burya from Gabrovo, Druzhba from Varna, Mizia from Pleven, and a representative from Plovdiv.

Archival photographs from the Bulgarian Tourist Association capture the scene, one of which features young pop singer Tanya Emilova performing for the audience. The participating companies have established histories within the textile sector. Boriana was founded in 1968, while the iconic clothing manufacturer Arda began operations in 1932.

Furthermore, the expansion of Sanya’s textile factory was approved by the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in 1972, and Mizia was established in 1960. Historically, during the period of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989), the fashion and textile manufacturing industries operated under state ownership and central planning. This industrial structure mandated that production focused on supplying the domestic market and facilitating exports to other nations within the Eastern Bloc, particularly the Soviet Union.

The 1974 show in Ruse exemplified the scale and centralized nature of the Bulgarian fashion industry at that time.

  1. Were the models featured at the Ruse fashion show primarily from local Bulgarian enterprises?
