200,000 Bulgarians Cast Votes Abroad, 53,000 Voted by Machine, Says Foreign Minister Neynsky

Caretaker Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky provided an update on Monday following Bulgaria’s early parliamentary elections, detailing the participation of Bulgarian citizens who traveled abroad to cast their ballots. According to the minister, just under 200,000 Bulgarian citizens voted from overseas. Of this total, 53,000 individuals cast their votes using voting machines.

Neynsky noted a significant logistical challenge regarding voter registration. She explained that 156,000 voters, representing 81% of those abroad, had not completed advance registration and instead submitted applications to vote directly on Election Day, which consequently slowed down the counting process. The minister provided updates from several international locations regarding the ongoing voting efforts.

In the United States, ballot counting in the westernmost voting sections was reported as continuing. Furthermore, in Turkiye, voting extended past the official end of Election Day in seven sections due to high turnout and resulting queues. In the United Kingdom, five voting sections in London required extended working hours.

Other nations also experienced extended voting periods. The Foreign Minister stated that in Spain and Norway, voting continued after 8 p.m. Additionally, two sections in Serbia reported that voting extended beyond the standard closing time.

These reports confirm the breadth of participation across various foreign jurisdictions, as the minister addressed the process of how many citizens successfully voted.
